Bavaria in Late Summer

I was blessed to recently travel to Bavaria Germany (Weiden in der Oberfalz). Below are some of the places I got to visit while I was there. When you see a picture of an adorable baby and his parents that is Austin Michael, my first grand-baby and his parents, Mike and Brittney. Life is sweet and they make it sweeter.

First are some pictures of the charming city of Weiden i.d. O.f. I took these on a beautiful Saturday morning. This is a time when the market place is really booming. It’s fun to sit back and enjoy the culture’s sights, sounds, smells and tastes!

Das Rathaus in Weiden

Das Rathaus in Weiden. Translated it means “The Town Hall.” This is no longer used for that purpose, but it’s so lovely!

Spaghetti Eis (Vanilla Gelato put through a ricer to make it look like spaghetti, delicious strawberry sauce, and white chocolate sprinkles. Glad I can’t find this just anywhere! We enjoyed this in the market place.

junge Mädchen und ihr Hund! I loved watching this little girl who was working hard to convince her dog that a sip and a dip in the fountain would be a good thing!

The new parents and their precious bundle!

The next two pictures are of the surrounding areas of Weiden. We were near Grafenwöhr/Vilseck area. I thought these were pretty interesting… in particular the 『Hobbit』 holes that people actually live in.

A few pictures of the old castle wall of Weiden viewed from the Max Reger park. I was intrigued to learn that Reger was from Weiden. I used to take classical voice lessons and Reger’s 『Maria Wiegenlied』 was one of the first German lieder I performed at a recital.

What remains of the original castle wall of Weiden. Circa 1200’s. It looks very Romanesque.

I plan on posting a few additional posts. One post in particular will display photos of Floßenbürg Concentration Camp — truly one of the most brutal death camps of the Nazi reign. I may do that one in sections so I can add background information on the Camp and on some of its victims such as Dietrich Bonhoeffer (1906 – 1945) who was reformed theologian and co-conspirator in part of Operation Valkyrie. No, he was not mentioned in the movie that was recently released, sadly enough.

Stay tuned!
